The Beverly & Sam Ross Gallery at Christian Brothers University announces a joint exhibition featuring two artists opening on November 2. “The Death of Fear” will feature works by Sisavanh Phouthavong Houghton in the main gallery and works by Nelson Gutierrez in the gallery foyer. A public reception for the artists will be held on Friday, November 9 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The exhibition will run through December 14. Houghton will also present an artist’s lecture in the gallery on Saturday, November 10 at 2:00 p.m.
“The Death of Fear” explores President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s concept of “Freedom from Fear” from the perspective of two artists who immigrated to the United States. Through methods of isolation, abstraction, and collage, each artist explores states of flux, the disconnection from destructive places or politics, and the fearless pursuit for a better life. The exhibition is in collaboration with For Freedoms, a platform for greater participation in the arts and in civil society that produces exhibitions, installations, public programs, and billboard campaigns to advocate for inclusive civic participation.

Photographs are essential references for painters when used properly. This class tackles photography/painting related issues such as how to use a photo as a reference – not just something to copy, what kind of image best translates into a painting, how to edit a ‘busy’ scene, combining sources and finding a strong composition. New students will learn the basics of oil painting as more experienced painters continue to develop and refine their skills. Though this class is a continuation of the September three-session class, students need not have taken the previous class to enjoy this one. Materials, color mixing and composition will be discussed throughout this five-session class.
