“Ranch Days in Dubois, Wyoming” A digital photography exhibit at The Samarkand @ The Samarkand Retirement Community

Santa Barbara art enthusiasts are invited to view the wonders of the West through the lens of local photographer, Pam Bigelow. “Ranch Days in Dubois, Wyoming,” a digital photography exhibit, is the featured display in the Fireside Room at The Samarkand retirement community, where Bigelow serves as director of sales. The Samarkand is located at 2550 Treasure Drive, Santa Barbara.

The exhibit opens with an artist’s reception on Monday, Aug. 7, 3:00-5:00 p.m., in the Fireside Room. Reservations are required by July 31, 2017. Call (805) 569-8572.

The exhibit runs through Friday, Sept. 29. Hours are 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m., daily. The Samarkand recommends visitors call (805) 569-8572 to schedule a viewing time.

Bigelow is self-taught photographer who has traveled the globe capturing nature’s beauty with her camera. Her passion for photography started in high school. She developed a love for wildlife photography during a trip to Barbados, where she placed bananas outside her villa to capture photos of wild monkeys. Now, her vacations center around opportunities to photograph wildlife in their environment.

Gaining the Confidence to Breastfeed • Advantages of breastfeeding for mother and baby• Physiology of lactation• Nutritional needs of mother and baby• Support role of your husband, family, and doctor• Challenges of getting started and learning tips for managing the transition The fee for this class is included in the Prepared Childbirth Series. If you are enrolled in a Prepared Childbirth Series, there is no fee and you do not need to register; otherwise the fee is $15.00.

Childbirth Center Tour – September 26, 2017 @ Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital

Visit Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Childbirth Center and birthing rooms, and learn more about Cottage’s family-centered approach to birth. Pre-admission, visitor guidelines, parking, and other relevant patient information will also be discussed.  If you are registered in a Prepared Childbirth Weekday Series, you will take this tour during one of the classes and you do not need to register.   Tours are free, but pre-registration is required.  Register per couple or family.  There is no need to register additional family members separately. Tours last 30 to 45 minutes. Meet in the main lobby at the intersection of Pueblo and Castillo Streets 10 minutes before the tour begins.

Prepared Childbirth Weekday Series: Sept 27 — Oct 25, 2017 (5 Wednesdays) @ Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital’s Prepared Childbirth Weekday Series will help prepare expectant families for the arrival of a new baby. Specially trained registered nurses provide expert preparation and support for the challenges of pregnancy and labor.   Course Content • Breathing, relaxation and coping methods for labor  • Stages of labor and delivery • Medical options for labor and birth, including Cesarean • Preparing for postpartum  • Childbirth Center tour • Getting to know your newborn • Gaining the Confidence to Breastfeed * • New Parent Class * * These separate classes are included in the fee for this Series.  It is not necessary to register separately for the Breastfeeding and New Parent classes if you are registered in a series.  You will receive more information on your registration receipt.   The childbirth series meets on Wednesdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.   The Breastfeeding and New Parent classes meet from 7:00pm to 9:00pm.

Caring for Patients with Underlying Psychiatric and Addictive Disorders Session A:  0800-1200 Caring for Patients with Underslying Psychiatric Disorders Session B:  1300-1600 When “Street Drugs” are No Longer on the Street Session A Patients hospitalized with a medical diagnosis may also have an underlying mental health disorder.  These patients are not well understood and can be challenging.  Lack of understanding of mental health disorders complicates care, leading to less than optimal patient outcomes.   Session B This session will identify the prevalence of substance abuse and best practices to care for those with substance use disorders.  The latest street lingo, user behaviors, and process for the confiscation of illicit substances found on hospital property will be addressed.
