Aggression in Dogs – Defensive Handling and Training With Michael Shikashio and Trish McMillan   Are you currently working with aggressive dogs or have an interest in learning more about how to safely work with aggressive dogs? Would you like to learn hands-on defensive handling skills? Do you want to add more to your toolbox for modifying aggressive behavior in dogs?   Michael Shikashio, CDBC and Trish McMillan MSc, CPDT-KA, ACCBC, CDBC will be presenting a two-day workshop on safety, defensive handling, and the behavior modification techniques used with aggressive dogs. Attendees will learn what is needed before working with aggressive dogs, gain hands-on experience in defensive handling and leash skills, and see videos of behavior modification in aggression cases. This workshop is open to all trainers, behavior consultants, veterinarians, shelter staff, animal control officers, or anyone interested in learning more about dog aggression and how to stay safe.  Day One  * Presentation includes hands-on practice of defensive handling and leash skills   Understand the ramifications for dog bites   What to know before taking aggression cases   Canine body language including precursors to aggression   What to do BEFORE meeting with clients   Additional safety measures to have in place   Safety and management equipment   How to take dogs in and out of kennels safely   Initial greetings in aggression cases with video examples   Defensive handling and leash skills including leash locks, muzzle wraps, back ties, accordion leash holds, and more   What to do if attacked by a dog   Presentation of case studies with video of dog to human aggression and how to choose appropriate tools and techniques    Day Two  * Presentation includes hands-on practice of defensive handling and leash skills   Dog-dog interactions with video examples   Canine body language in dog-dog interactions including precursors to aggression   How to introduce dogs to each other in shelter and home environments   How to safely break up a dog fight   Leash handling skills when working dog-dog cases   Shelter dog playgroups   Shelter dog assessments   What to do with off leash dogs that approach the dog you’re handling   Presentation of case studies with video of dog to dog aggression and how to choose appropriate tools and techniques  Speaker Bios  Trish McMillan holds a master of science degree in animal behavior, and is a certified professional dog trainer, certified dog behavior consultant and associate certified cat behavior consultant.  She worked for the ASPCA for nearly eight years at their NYC, and then as part of their field team, helping assess and rehabilitate dogs from cruelty cases, dogfighting and hoarding situations.  Trish does animal behavior consulting in Asheville, North Carolina, working with dogs, cats and horses. She is also VP of Behavior and Training at Instinct Dog Behavior & Training. Her farm, Pibble Hill, is currently home to mostly rescued animals of five species. Trish speaks and consults nationally and internationally on animal sheltering issues, dog, cat, and horse behavior, dog aggression, and defensive handling.  Trish currently co-chairs the Shelter Behavior division of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and runs their popular online shelter dog behavior mentorship.  Michael Shikashio, CDBC, is the past president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC), and provides private consultations working with dog aggression cases through his business AggressiveDog.com. Michael is fully certified through the IAABC and is a full member of the Association of Professional Dog Trainers (APDT). Michael is sought after for his expert opinion by numerous media outlets, including the New York Times, New York Post, Baltimore Sun, WebMD, Women’s Health Magazine, Real Simple Magazine, The Chronicle of the Dog, and Steve Dale’s Pet World. He is a featured speaker on the topic of canine aggression at conferences and seminars around the world, and he offers a variety of online courses, webinars, and mentorships. A large stuffed dog in the STANDING position with a flat buckle collar on it (Melissa and Doug Black Lab, Husky, Yellow Lab, etc.….). Enjoy delicious bites from many of Austin’s top chefs using the freshest farm ingredients and handcrafted sips from local brewers, wine merchants, and mixologists as you visit each farm. Guided farm tours allow guests to get to know the farmers behind the food, learn how it’s grown, and connect with our local food systems. Proceeds help to maintain the sustainability of the four urban farms featured on the tour and will benefit the Council for Healthy Food Systems, the sister non-profit of the Farm and Ranch Freedom Alliance. CHFS promotes diversified local and regional foods systems that are healthy, safe, economically sound, and environmentally sustainable, through education and research. *Purchasing Tickets* All ticket holders will travel between each of the four urban farms during the duration of the event.
