The Missing Link: The Creation of CHOC Children’s Mental Health Initiative @ Boathouse Collective

In May of 2015, CHOC launched a landmark effort to partner with community leaders and create a pediatric mental health system of care for children, teens and young adults in Orange County. CHOC’s commitments to this effort include building a Mental Health Center that will provide inpatient care to children, teens and young adults, as well as establishing a robust outpatient care program. Learning Objectives: 1) Demonstrate the need for increased services, programs and support, specifically for children.2) Demonstrate CHOC’s commitment and partnership with other community leaders to create the best pediatric mental health system of care for our children and families.3) Recognize the need for inpatient facilities for children and CHOC’s commitment and plan to meet this need. 4) State the need for outpatient programs and services for children and families and CHOC’s commitment and plan to meet this need. 5) Explain the importance of providing care for children with co-occurring conditions through the Co-Occurring Clinic, which opened in September of 2015. This clinic treats children whose physical conditions, such as diabetes or cancer, are complicated by mental health challenges.  Presenter Details: Heather Huszti, Ph.D., is a licensed psychologist and Chief Psychologist at CHOC Children’s as well as the Section Chief for Pediatric Psychology. She is the leader of CHOC’s Mental Health Initiative. Dr. Huszti is also the director of training for the Psychology Training Program at CHOC Children’s. She completed her doctoral degree in clinical psychology with an emphasis in family therapy at Texas Tech University and completed an internship and fellowship at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center (OUHSC). She was on faculty at OUHSC, where she was the director of the Pediatric Psychology Program. She joined CHOC Children’s in 2002. Dr. Huszti has served as a principal investigator on a number of federally-funded research projects with a focus on adherence to treatments for medical illnesses. Her areas of interest include pediatric psychology, children and families struggling with life stress and mental health issues, and techniques to help reduce pain.
