Event Description: Religious liberty lawyer, Asma Uddin, has long considered her work defending people of all faiths to be a calling more than a job. She combines her experience as a person of Muslim faith with her legal training to defend the idea that all individuals have a right to religious liberty. Yet she has seen an ominous increase in attempts to exclude Muslims from their inalienable rights by the claim that “Islam is not a religion.”
In her highly acclaimed new book, When Islam is Not a Religion, Uddin shows how this politicized view of religion affects all Americans. Analyzing the shifting tides of American culture, she outlines a way forward for individuals and communities navigating today’s culture wars.

Uddin has worked on cases at the U.S. Supreme Court and federal appellate courts, testified before Congress, and produced and advised on acclaimed documentaries. She lives in Washington DC
