Site Contact Details: The Seattle Bach Choir 2019-2020 season continues with music of Passing & Passages, specifically, the passage from captivity to freedom.

This spring marks the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. Among the countless victims at Auschwitz was Austrian composer Marcel Tyberg.

Two mass settings constitute the entirety of his surviving sacred works. We commemorate the anniversary of the camps’ liberation with the West Coast premiere of Tyberg’s Mass in F, which the composer played for his friends on the last night he was seen.
This program also features diverse settings of the ultimate psalm of captivity, “By the waters of Babylon, we sat down and wept…. How can we sing the Lord’s song in a foreign land?” Settings of the German chorale version, “An Wasserflüssen Babylon,” of metrical French and Polish versions, and of the full psalm text in Hebrew, provide the inspiration behind Arvo Pärt’s textless, atmospheric “An den Wassern zu Babel.”

We welcome Daniel Mahraun, our new musical director this season. He comes to the Seattle Bach Choir having served as Director of Choral Activities at Bethany College (Kan.) and Minnesota State University Moorhead, and having worked for nearly ten years with The Rose Ensemble. Dr. Mahraun brings expertise, energy, and excitement to our offerings.
The Seattle Bach Choir is an accomplished 48-voice SATB choir, dedicated to presenting high quality performances of choral literature that’s not often performed. While the music of the Baroque and J.S. Bach remains our mainstay, we are dedicated to offering a variety of choral works from across the centuries.

Our 2:15 pre-concert lecture will be presented by Rabbi Daniel Weiner from Temple De Hirsch Sinai. A wine-and-cheese reception will be served, preceding the 3PM Sunday afternoon concert. We hope you will join us!
