“Forge, Cast, Fabricate” has become an annual tradition at the Ross Gallery, offering the apprentices and staff artists at the Metal Museum an opportunity to exhibit their own work. Apprentices Elizabeth Belz, Reed Peck-Kriss, and Cassi Rebman are featured — along with the Museum’s staff artists Kevin Burge, Nashley Fausnight, Lori Gipson, Jim Masterson, Ariana Sellers, Jeannie Tomlinson Saltmarsh, and James Vanderpool — in this year’s exhibition. Through the medium of cloth and stitch, quilts can tell stories, protest injustice and document history. Paula Kovarik quilts in order to piece, layer, and stitch a narrative that represents her concern for what is going on in our country. Her art reflects American anxiety in a world of danger and distrust. It mirrors the ominous overtones of decisions disconnected from everyday life and the feeling that we are helpless in the wake of unmoored leadership. Six contemporary artists and poets from Guatemala present work related to weaving. They consider the production of textiles as a site for knowledge, language transmission, and cultural tradition within Maya communities. Seen together, these artists’ works in textile, video, poetry, performance, and installation encompass ways of understanding history, relationships, legacies of violence, and survival.

Synopsis: The Marquis de Sade is put in an asylum for his sadomasochistic pornographic writing. The asylum is overseen by the Abbe de Coulmier . After confiscating the Marquis’ quills and paper, the Abbe is surprised to find lascivious new stories circulating in public. The source? A lusty young seamstress named Madeleine has been smuggling material out of the asylum. The Abbe is driven to increasingly desperate acts to silence the Marquis.
