Artist Richard Scott conducts eight drawing classes focusing on the art, architecture, and gardens of The Huntington. Sessions are suitable for beginners as well as experienced artists who want to hone their skills. For returning students, lesson plans will be customized to suit current skill level. Feb. 8- Confident Drawing How to Accurately Draw Anything In the first session, students learn a methodology to confidently draw anything with excellent accuracy. Students apply the lessons to draw artworks in the art galleries. Feb. 15- The Shift How to See & Think Like an Artist Students learn a thinking process to overcome mental obstacles that impede drawing skills, and produce drawings that express the essence of a subject matter. Students apply the lessons to draw various elements in the gardens. Feb. 22- Seeing the Light How to Draw Energy The most elusive effect in a subject is light. In this session, students learn how to understand the role of light in drawing, and capture the effects of light in their artworks. Students apply the lessons to draw various elements in the gardens. Feb. 29- Orchestrating with a Pencil Students learn how to uncover key visual relationships in a subject, and how to focus on those relationships to orchestrate a beautiful artwork. Advanced rendering techniques will also be discussed and demonstrated. Students apply this thinking process and techniques to draw the gardens of The Huntington. March 7- Haiku of Drawing In this session, students learn an approach and technique for simplifying a subject matter down to those elements with the most personal meaning. Students apply the lesson to draw the gardens of The Huntington. March 14- A Fresh Perspective Many artists see perspective as the Holy Grail of drawing. In this session, students learn how to think differently to make drawing in perspective easier and more fun to do. Students apply the lessons to draw the architecture of The Huntington. March 21- Secrets to Drawing Architecture In this session, students learn a fun approach to simplify the vast details and linear perspective that make architecture a challenging subject. Students apply this thinking process and technique to draw the architecture of The Huntington. March 28- Secrets to Drawing Trees, Plants & Clouds In the final session, students learn to see and simplify the landscape elements: trees, plants and clouds so that they can be effectively drawn. Students apply this thinking process and technique to draw the gardens of The Huntington. Class is held in the Roger’s Classroom of the Education and Visitor Center.
