Warren Pope: Red Lines, Blood Lines
Feb 13 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Event Description: In recognition of Black History Month, Vashon Center for the Arts will present “Warren Pope: Blood Lines, Red Lines,” a solo exhibition by West Seattle artist Warren Pope whose powerful work addresses the history of redlining, social injustice and the artist’s African heritage.

“Most of my work is driven by social justice,” Pope said. “This show is about redlining, gentrification and relocation, but I also like to transfer beauty into the place where you look.”

Pope’s art explores matters of systemic inequities. This show is an abstract art exhibition that examines the historical and contemporary realities of redlining (refusing to loan money to people in areas with populations of color), displacement and American slavery trade. He also shows art inspired and in homage to his ancestors in Africa. With a minimalist style, Pope combines three dimensional art with basic visual elements such as lines, shapes, and color to explore redlining history.

That beauty emerges from his unique combination of canvas, wire, steel, banana leaves and wood in his abstract mixed media and contemporary sculpture. Yet his subject matter, social justice and the profoundly unjust practice of redlining pierces the heart.

With an international influence, a socially conscious mentality, a firm view for cultural equity and a dash of forwardness, Warren Pope has crafted an established visual art career inside and outside of the Pacific Northwest. Born in Munich, Germany of a Czech Mother and an African American Father, Warren and his two brothers were often ridiculed and beloved by their communities for their art and outward connection to social equality and justice. Like many military children, Warren was exposed to cultural differences, social customs and awkward experiences of acceptances and domestic indifference. Pope’s father, John Pope, served in the military and for a time was stationed at Fort Lewis in Tacoma, Washington.

Frozen is a musical with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, and book by Jennifer Lee, based on the 2013 film of the same name. The story centers on the relationship between two sisters who are princesses, Elsa and Anna. Elsa has magical powers to freeze objects and people, which she does not know how to control. After inheriting the throne, Elsa flees, inadvertently causes the kingdom to become frozen in an eternal winter, and nearly kills her sister. She must sacrifice and show true love to save the day.

Produced by Disney Theatrical Productions, the musical had a tryout at the Buell Theatre in Denver, Colorado in August 2017 and premiered on Broadway in March 2018 at the St. James Theatre to mixed reviews. A national tour is set to begin on November 10, 2019 at Proctor's Theatre in Schenectady, New York.
