SEL is short for social and emotional learning. Per CASEL definition, its “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.” Today, academic performance is not enough to stay successful, happy, healthy and optimistic in today’s competitive and stressful world! And, with numerous research and reports supporting the need for SEL, educators across the country strongly agree that teaching these life skills positively impact students’ academic performance as well as enforce critical character traits for a child’s success in life. (Casel.org) But, do you wonder if your child is being taught these necessary social and emotional life skills to lead an optimistic, conscientious, confident and compassionate life? Is your child equipped to persevere, be authentic and successfully manage emotions and relationships? Well, if your family is like most; very busy with academics and sports that sometimes family talk of critical topics like respect, gratitude, integrity happiness self-acceptance, open minded and responsibility seem to fall through the cracks.
