In the history of cooking, there has never been a more challenging environment than cooking in the craft in which humans take to the skies. The tale begins with meals aboard balloons and zeppelins, where cooking was accomplished below explosive bags of hydrogen, ending with space station dinners that were cooked thousands of miles below. Richard Foss’s book “Food in the Air and Space: The Surprising History of Food and Drink in the Skies” is the first to chart that history worldwide, exploring the intricacies of inflight dining from 1783 to the present day, aboard balloons, zeppelins, land-based aircraft and flying boats, jets, and spacecraft. RSVP’s are recommended.

“A Small Indiscretion” fixes an unflinching eye on the power of desire and the danger of obsession as it unfolds the story of one woman’s reckoning with a youthful mistake.
At nineteen, Annie Black trades a bleak future in her washed-out hometown for a London winter of drinking to oblivion and yearning for deliverance. Some two decades later, she is married to a good man and settled in San Francisco, with a son and two daughters and a successful career designing artistic interior lights. One June morning, a photograph arrives in her mailbox, igniting an old longing and setting off a chain of events that rock the foundations of her marriage and threaten to overturn her family’s hard-won happiness. Come and meet the author before she gets really, really famous!! RSVP’s are recommended.

Jenifer Ringer, author of Dancing Through It

visits {pages} on Thursday, February 26 at 7pm

Jenifer Ringer, a principal dancer with the New York City Ballet, was thrust into the headlines after her weight was commented on by a New York Times critic, and her response ignited a public dialogue about dance and weight. Ballet aficionados and aspiring performers of all ages will want to join Ringer behind the scenes as she shares her journey from student to star and candidly discusses both her struggle with an eating disorder and the media storm that erupted after the Times review. An unusually upbeat account of life on the stage, Dancing Through It is also a coming-of-age story and an inspiring memoir of faith and of triumph over the body issues that torment all too many women and men.

Jenifer is now the Director of the Colburn Dance Academy, a pre-professional ballet training program in Los Angeles. We are very honored to have her speak at {pages}. RSVP’s recommended. Call 310-318-0900 or email us at info@pagesabookstore.com

Acclaimed author, and therapist Smith confronts the question she encounters every day in private practice—what happens after we die? In an exploration of the afterlife that is part personal, part prescriptive, Smith invites us on her journey into the unknown. Chronicling our steps along the path that bridges this world and the next and drawing on both her personal losses, as well as her background working in hospice as a bereavement counselor, Smith attempts to show how exploring the afterlife can have a positive impact on the grief process.
