DIVING DEEPER: A 6-WEEK NEXT STEPS WORKSHOP* A 6-week Workshop To Support Mindful Parenting Michelle Charfen, MD Centered Parenting Certified Echo Parent Educator Thursday May 5th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 12th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 19th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 26th • 7-9 pm Thursday June 2nd • 7-9 pm NO CLASS JUNE 9TH and Thursday June 16th • 7-9 pm at Manhattan Beach Nursery School 1520 Nelson Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266   For those of you that would like to pay in cash/check at the workshop, use promo code “cash” and then register without paying online.  Space is limited, please register on Eventbrite to save your space.   As parents we encounter many roadblocks while navigating a paradigm that may be drastically different than how we were raised. We often revert to old patterns when faced with challenges. This class will be a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to share your current struggles and explore tools to better support yourself on your own unique parenting journey. I began offering 2-Week Next Steps Workshops 2 years ago. The feedback has been that the workshops are very helpful but many participants would like them to be longer. In response to this request I have created this 6-week workshop. The material presented will blend insight from current research with my personal struggles and successes as a parent.   This interactive workshop will address the following questions/issues: How do we maintain focus on our long term goals? How do we create more joy and ease in our relationships? How do we learn to look at challenging situations as opportunities for growth? How do we recognize our own limiting beliefs and create new ones? How do we recognize our fixed mindsets and develop practices to foster a growth mindset? How do we learn to rewire our own brains so we can develop successful strategies for communicating and coaching our children? How do we set limits from a centered place of compassion? Once we recognize our own triggers, what practices can we develop to be less triggered over time? How do learn to use our own anger in a healthy and constructive way? How do we develop a practice of self-care, self-acceptance and self-compassion? How do we develop unconditional positive regard for ourselves and in turn for our children? * This class is intended for parents that have completed a 6-week course in Centered Parenting or Echo Parenting.  Please contact Michelle directly if you have any questions. michelle@michellecharfen.com

SEL is short for social and emotional learning. Per CASEL definition, its “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.” Today, academic performance is not enough to stay successful, happy, healthy and optimistic in today’s competitive and stressful world! And, with numerous research and reports supporting the need for SEL, educators across the country strongly agree that teaching these life skills positively impact students’ academic performance as well as enforce critical character traits for a child’s success in life. (Casel.org) But, do you wonder if your child is being taught these necessary social and emotional life skills to lead an optimistic, conscientious, confident and compassionate life? Is your child equipped to persevere, be authentic and successfully manage emotions and relationships? Well, if your family is like most; very busy with academics and sports that sometimes family talk of critical topics like respect, gratitude, integrity happiness self-acceptance, open minded and responsibility seem to fall through the cracks. May 14 @ 10:00 am – 10:00 am

CoderDojo South Bay teaches kids 8-17 to code in the beautiful South Bay of Los Angeles.   Our next event will take place at the beautiful new Manhattan Beach Public Library on Highland Avenue on Saturday, May 14th, from 10am – 11.45am.   It also happens to be Scratch Day (!) which is a global network of events that celebrates Scratch – and the young people who code and create with it.  During Scratch Day, kids and adults gather to share projects and learn from one another.   Parents must accompany kids if they are 13 or under, and your child needs to bring a fully charged laptop, if possible. We may have a few extra laptops, though, but only if you email us directly to coordinate ahead of time.     We will be hosting sessions for both Beginning and Advanced levels.  Kids will learn how to use Scratch, code their own web pages, basic programming and more!     Remember, CoderDojos have just one rule: “Above All: Be Cool” – our goals are to have fun, learn and share with each other.   We hope you can make it!   Cheers,   CoderDojo South Bay

4th Annual Tour de Pier @ Manhattan Beach Pier
May 15 @ 8:30 am – 1:30 pm

Registration is currently open for the fundraising event of the spring season, the 4th Annual Tour de Pier. The award-winning stationary cycling event makes its way back to the iconic Manhattan Beach Pier. The unique fundraiser benefits three cancer charities: the Hirshberg Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research; the Cancer Support Community Redondo Beach and the Uncle Kory Foundation.

The area’s best instructors and celebrity guests will spin riders through five 50-minute sessions with energizing music and loads of excitement. In addition to cycling, there will be a Health & Fitness Expo, a Cardio Kids Fun Zone with games and activities as well as entertainment.

Previous celebrity riders have featured: Paul Stanley (KISS guitarist); Tony Cruz (Olympic cyclist); Eric Fonoimoana (Olympic gold medalist – volleyball); Heather Petri (Olympic gold medalist – water polo); Kerri Walsh (3x Olympic gold medalist – volleyball); David Tutera (WE tv); Dr. Jennifer Berman, MD (co-host, The Drs.) and more.

Participants register to reserve a bike for five one-hour sessions and recruit up to four teammates or ride individually. This event has sold out three years in a row. Online registration closes on Sunday, May 1 at midnight or as space permits. Since 2013, the Tour de Pier has raised more than $1.8M for cancer charities.
