SEL is short for social and emotional learning. Per CASEL definition, its “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships and make responsible decisions.” Today, academic performance is not enough to stay successful, happy, healthy and optimistic in today’s competitive and stressful world! And, with numerous research and reports supporting the need for SEL, educators across the country strongly agree that teaching these life skills positively impact students’ academic performance as well as enforce critical character traits for a child’s success in life. (Casel.org) But, do you wonder if your child is being taught these necessary social and emotional life skills to lead an optimistic, conscientious, confident and compassionate life? Is your child equipped to persevere, be authentic and successfully manage emotions and relationships? Well, if your family is like most; very busy with academics and sports that sometimes family talk of critical topics like respect, gratitude, integrity happiness self-acceptance, open minded and responsibility seem to fall through the cracks. DIVING DEEPER: A 6-WEEK NEXT STEPS WORKSHOP* A 6-week Workshop To Support Mindful Parenting Michelle Charfen, MD Centered Parenting Certified Echo Parent Educator Thursday May 5th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 12th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 19th • 7-9 pm Thursday May 26th • 7-9 pm Thursday June 2nd • 7-9 pm NO CLASS JUNE 9TH and Thursday June 16th • 7-9 pm at Manhattan Beach Nursery School 1520 Nelson Avenue, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266   For those of you that would like to pay in cash/check at the workshop, use promo code “cash” and then register without paying online.  Space is limited, please register on Eventbrite to save your space.   As parents we encounter many roadblocks while navigating a paradigm that may be drastically different than how we were raised. We often revert to old patterns when faced with challenges. This class will be a safe and nonjudgmental space for you to share your current struggles and explore tools to better support yourself on your own unique parenting journey. I began offering 2-Week Next Steps Workshops 2 years ago. The feedback has been that the workshops are very helpful but many participants would like them to be longer. In response to this request I have created this 6-week workshop. The material presented will blend insight from current research with my personal struggles and successes as a parent.   This interactive workshop will address the following questions/issues: How do we maintain focus on our long term goals? How do we create more joy and ease in our relationships? How do we learn to look at challenging situations as opportunities for growth? How do we recognize our own limiting beliefs and create new ones? How do we recognize our fixed mindsets and develop practices to foster a growth mindset? How do we learn to rewire our own brains so we can develop successful strategies for communicating and coaching our children? How do we set limits from a centered place of compassion? Once we recognize our own triggers, what practices can we develop to be less triggered over time? How do learn to use our own anger in a healthy and constructive way? How do we develop a practice of self-care, self-acceptance and self-compassion? How do we develop unconditional positive regard for ourselves and in turn for our children? * This class is intended for parents that have completed a 6-week course in Centered Parenting or Echo Parenting.  Please contact Michelle directly if you have any questions. michelle@michellecharfen.com

Who am I? : A Workshop for Men @ Manhattan Beach, CA
May 21 @ 9:30 am – 1:00 pm

The cultural story of what it is to be a man has been hammered into us since we were born. It surrounds us; it is inside of us dictating how we live, what we do, and even what we want out of life. That identity, however useful for society, is only part of the story and begins to feel like a straightjacket for the growing individual who feels the need to know himself more deeply.

Maybe more men need to look inside and ask the question: Who am I?

Through Hermetic Philosophy, this workshop for men only will help us distinguish how we have been told we should be, from who we are inside. We will learn tools to develop our true strength and energy, accept the full range of our emotions, and begin to interact more honestly and consciously with our lovers, children, and peers. If you are a man on the path of growth and self-knowledge, join the Men of IHP for a profound morning that will help you to cultivate your true inner wealth as a man and an individual.
